Frequently asked questions
The Living Matter is the name I use to describe the creative, process-focused way of working I draw on — inviting exploration through materials, gesture, and sensory engagement. It offers a gentle alternative to talk-based approaches when words feel insufficient.
Sessions typically take place weekly, or at a frequency that feels right for you.
We can discuss what rhythm feels most supportive during our first meeting.
There is no fixed length of time. Therapy continues for as long as it feels helpful, and may come to an end when you feel you have reached your goals, or when we agree together that you feel more confident, grounded, and able to continue on your own.
I offer sessions in person at my practice in Chiswick, West London, and online, making it possible to work together whether you are local, elsewhere in the UK, or internationally.
Not at all. No previous art experience or skill is required. Art therapy is not about making something beautiful — it is about what the process evokes for you, not the final image.
You don’t have to talk continuously, and you don’t need to explain your artwork. Some people find words emerge naturally; others prefer silence or movement. Both are welcome.
We use a range of simple materials — such as paint, colour, paper, collage elements, and drawing tools — chosen to invite exploration and expression rather than artistic perfection.
No. You do not need a formal diagnosis to benefit from art therapy. People seek support for many reasons, including anxiety, overwhelm, feeling stuck, life transitions, or simply the wish to explore experience in a different way.
Therapy works best when there is a good fit. Your first session gives you a sense of my approach and whether it feels right for you. If it doesn’t feel like the right fit, I’m happy to support you in thinking about other options.
Online sessions take place via a secure video platform. You’ll need a private, quiet space and basic art materials at home. I can suggest simple materials if helpful — no specialist equipment is required.
I work in a trauma-informed way, at a pace that feels safe and contained. Sessions focus on building safety, awareness, and regulation rather than revisiting experiences in detail unless appropriate.
Sessions are £120 for 50 minutes. Payment details and cancellation terms are discussed at the start of therapy and provided in writing.
Yes. Sessions are confidential and follow the ethical guidelines of the British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT) and HCPC, with standard safeguarding exceptions explained at the outset.
